Computer help in Collier Row.
Collier Row is largely residential and close enough that same-day visits are usually straightforward. It is one of the areas where I most often end up doing the job on the spot rather than taking anything away.
Ten minutes or so from Harold Hill. I come to you, you drop it in, or I collect and return — whichever suits.
What Collier Row houses are like to work in.
Suburban housing on quieter streets, a good number of them family homes where one computer does everything for everyone. Shared machines age differently: more accounts, more installed software, more chances for something to go wrong, and far more that gets lost if the drive fails.
What comes up most here
- Shared family computers that have slowed to a crawl
- Printers that have stopped talking to the laptop after an update
- Getting a proper backup running so a failure stops being a disaster
The jobs I do most round here.
Speed up my PC
For machines that take five minutes to think about opening a browser.
- Finding out which of the three usual culprits it actually is: the drive, the startup load, or genuinely not enough memory
- Clearing what is starting up in the background that should not be
- A health check on the drive, because "slow" is often "failing"
Printer & scanner pairing
Getting the printer talking to everything in the house.
- The printer connected to every computer, phone and tablet in the house
- Scanning to email or to a folder set up and actually tested
- Wireless printing working from the sofa, not just the desk
Virus scan + total backup
Clean the machine, and get your files somewhere safe.
- A full clean of viruses, malware and the browser hijackers that reinstall themselves in every browser
- Your files backed up as part of the job, not offered as an extra
- Ongoing backup set up so it keeps running without you remembering

Asked a lot in Collier Row.
The family computer is unusably slow. Is it worth fixing?
Usually yes, and usually for far less than replacing it. It is normally a failing drive, too much starting up in the background, or not enough memory — I will tell you which before you spend anything.
Do you set up backups?
As part of most jobs, and I will set it so it keeps running without you having to remember. The moment you most want a backup is the moment you discover you have not got one.
I also cover these.
